Speak!!

Have you ever listen to your own speeches or daily conversations? Are you singlish speaking? Do you speak bad English? Or you are one of those who speaks perfect good English? And what constitutes good English?

Born into a Chinese speaking family, friends around you are singlish speaking but you don't have the habit of decorating your conversations with "la", "lor", "leh"? So you think you are speaking good English just because you stayed away from those redundant sounding words? Think again.

Is having limited vocational vocabulary a sin or fallacy that warrants you to be deemed less smart? I tell you, that's a myth.

Look around you and listen to the conversations going on. So what did your ears pick up? Singlish? Bad English? Good English? What matters more? Someone who can speak good English or someone whom you can fully understand and communicate with?

While some occupations, sports or culture may require you to speak good perfect English finished with bombastic vocabs, not being able to doesn't mean you're dumb. In today's society, where many of us grew up having to master a few language, many of us fail to fully grasp one. Jack of all trades, master of none. If you ask me, what does it mean to be a Singaporean, I'll tell you its the ability to use more than 4 languages in one sentence. Want to blame someone for your bad English? My teachers speak Singlish too.

Think you can't speak good English and take makes you less 'high-class'? Bullshit. Rather than thinking you've failed your language I think you've mastered a wonderful skill. The ability to use multiple languages so well that you have have the capability in using them all in one sentence. :)
