6th Anniversary of Sept 11
11th September 2001, the most tragic thing that anyone can ever imagine took place. Planes crashed into World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. The whole of America was in shock and wailing, mourning the number of lives lost. Streets were covered in ash, shocked and terrified survivors as well as grief stricken relatives. Fire- fighters, paramedics and volunteers take on the rumble, frantically searching for survivors. The world mourned and extended their greatest sympathy for the once vibrant nation now covered in a blanket of solemness.
Before I go on I extend deepest condolences to the family members, relatives and America.
Today, as we mourned over the victims and the sacrificed, the question that we need to ask ourselves is exactly how much longer are we going to mourn as a country? There is no wrong in mourning over the deceased, but for a 6 years and as a nation, is it too much? On an individual basis, you can mourn for as long as it helps you to feel better. Yes, lives were lost, stock market crashed and lives were disrupted. After the tragic event, America and its allies invaded Iraq to hunt down the terrorists involved. All was well with America determined to eradicate terrorism, with the other sympathising countries helping. The war on terror did not proceed as hoped and now we're faced with a even more torn region ( Middle East aka terrorist producing and breeding factory ). The whole issue was even used as a political carrot by the Democrats to win the recent election. Right know Americans themselves are calling for the withdrawal of troops from the region. We see a total 360 degree change in reaction of the people. And why is this so?
From invasion till today, the number of soldiers lost is sky high. Soldiers on war are now under trained and not given equipments of the supposed quality. Families, soldiers, Americans are no longer sure of where the war is headed for. Patriotism is wearing thin as families want their soldiers back home. This is what is happening besides the sky high lost of lives and the chaos in Middle East now. Solution? White House hasn't given us a satisfying one. And right now, even the heros of the moment are asking for compensation for the detriments of their health.
So now it is about time America steps out of the grief blanket to look at the situation again. I know its easier said then done. But mourning over the lost of a family member is different from doing it as a nation. Right now, perhaps the most important thing is finding a solution to the war on terror. The mess that was caused ( indirectly because of 911), the lives lost and disrupted as a result of this. While the rumble are cleared and the new buildings about to be built on Ground Zero, its also time people move on as a nation. Because America needs to move on as a nation and let history be history, settle the mess in front of them right now. There is only so much a nation can mourn, too much and it blurs a nation.
I don't have a solution because I'm not General David Petraeus. But as a third person, I wonder how much longer will this mourning as a nation take place. Are we gonna mourn for a decade like that of Princess Diana? Like I've said, familial mourning is not an issue, but nation mourning needs to have a limit. I'm not gonna go too much into this over here because I now there are people who reads my blog who are still very affected by this emotionally. Never mind if you think you're ready for this. I'll keep this issue for my coffee mates. :)
In loving memory of the victims of Sept 11.
